Visst skulle det vara praktiskt att ha hela universum i din hand? Det är möjligt med denna tyska 1500-talsring som går att fälla ut till en astronomisk sfär! När du är klar med dina planetstudier fäller du bara ihop den igen.

Fog of Love: Romance as Game, Games as Romance

My very good friend Kit hooked me up with a copy of Fog of Love, a two-player board game about romance. It’s not a game for romance! It’s not for couples looking to spice up their relationship. It’s way more interesting than that. And it’s gotten me thinking about how narrow gaming often is. First,… Continue reading Fog of Love: Romance as Game, Games as Romance →

Fog of Love is definitely a very interesting and fun game, different from most other games I ever played. I would not call it an #RPG, but it does have some things in common (you play characters and make choices for them, and the players build a story together. but I think it's not as personal as an rpg). I liked how it translates relationships into game mechanics, especially how it bakes in a very human component of trying to understand what your partner is playing towards, and deciding if you should make the move that's better for you, the one that's better for your partner and guessing if they are making their or your best interests. It's a very particular kind of collaborative game

and #StarCrossed has been on my radar for years not, I have to play it sooner or later :D

characters whose parents are still alive and well

One ten years ago I used to play on a pbf set in the world of Naruto, and I remember that I specifically made my character to still have both parents alive and well, and having a happy relationship with them. The evening before his first lesson he had them over for dinner, and he often went to their house to see them. It was so funny to see my character surrounded by all those edgy, dark kids and he being all sunny and optimistic xD

I was never a Gplus user, but I hope lots and lots of #gplusRPG people manage to connect here in the land of the free. In fact, it feels like this is my chance to join you all in online conversation w/out worrying about corporate gatekeepers, at last.

Hashtag to discover G+ refugees of the RPG community

So, I've been around for a few weeks now and IMO the fediverse/federation isn't very good at letting people discover each other. So I want to try something: let's use the #gplusRPG hashtag to find people coming from G+ who landed on diaspora, friendica, mastodon or whatever.

If you are interested in tabletop RPGs and come from the Google+ RPG community, and if you want to find like-minded people on the fediverse/federation, share a public post with the #gplusRPG hashtag, so that others can find you easily!

A big shoutout to @Wilhelm Fitzpatrick for this info: basically, both on the federation (diaspora) and fediverse (mastodon), if a post is created, it's broadcast to everyone who follows the creator of the post, and thus it appears on the hubs/servers the followers are on.
So let's say I create a post here with my friendica account. Both @Rafu 🇮🇹 :heart_pan: (on tabletop.social, a mastodon hub) and @Wilhelm Fitzpatrick (on joindiaspora.com, a disapora hub) follow me. This means that my post is now visible on both their hubs. Specifically, if I add a hashtag to my post, that hashtag is now on their two hubs, and can be searched/filtered for. And if they post (or reshare) the hashtag, it will spread over to all hubs of their followers, and so on. It's not retroactive, i.e. my post won't show up on their follower's hubs, but those followers could decide to follow me and if I made another post (or re-shared my own post some time later), it will show up (and be discoverable) on their hubs too.

This actually sounds more complicated than it is. Basically, while it's not perfect, hashtags do propagate through the fediverse and federation.
- make a public post with the #gplusRPG hashtag
- follow the hashtag itself so that other people's posts show up in your stream
- follow new people
- from time to time make the public post again, so that it reaches farther and farther :D

A big thanks also to whoever added the #gplusRPG hashtag to the #3x3RPGs posts (I think it was @Michael Miller?). The hashtag has piggy-backed the post's success, and I find the idea very good because #3x3RPGs is a beautiful way to introduce yourself to other RPG players. Good job!
Michael also posted the hashtag over to twitter, thanks for that too! :D

Wow, thanks for the info @rafial@joindiaspora.com! So while I'm still thinking of a better alternative, let's see if this #gplusRPG thing works. I see it's being shared together with the #3x3RPGs hashtag on diaspora, mastodon, friendica and twitter, so that's not bad :)

And so yesterday GPlus died.

I wasn't engaging with it a lot in the last month, but I had already felt that what I've found interesting, motivating and empowering for me as an individual was moving away.

When I first met people from the #RPG communiy in #GPlus I was in a time and mood where I was thinking about quitting RPG as a hobby.

What I was able to do through GPlus and Google Hangouts ignited back again the passion in me about games and telling stories. It is strange how a social media platform changed my life, but I cannot think about the connections I've made and mantained during the last years without GPlus. It allowed me to be exposed to a world of active, interesting and motivated creators, players and enthusiasts.
Without the connections that GPlus made possible for me, I'm not sure I would be where I am today. For sure I would not have been exposed the way I have been to some people and concept that allowed me to view the gaming activity with different eyes and perspectives.

The point is, GPlus was not perfect, but it did a simple thing: It allowed me to know people and communities. Some of these people are now close to what I would define family for me, others are good friends, the ones you want to talk to, share quality time with and that you care about. Some of these communities are now my communities too.
It allowed me to be exposed to a lot of interesting posts and conversations from brilliant people I learned from.
Whitout GPlus I would not have ever tried to write and run games, nor games in the #LGBT space at all.
Games have been a great way to explore and become aware of my identity.

This is something I've not yet found in other social media platforms. Facebook is only noise, echo chambers and advertising. I cannot really relate to people by interests there. I've never got to be engaged in Twitter. Instagram maybe is nice, but it is another thing.

In the end, GPlus was a tool. I hope to find another good tool here in the Fediverse.
